Community & Charity
Our Firm Charity for 2017, as voted by everyone within the Firm, is Alzheimer’s Research UK.
As part of last year's fundraising effort, Lewis Silkin undertook the Grand Canal Challenge 2016, in which a team of 41 volunteers undertook a 26-mile walk along the Grand Union Canal from Harefield Hospital in Hillingdon to Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea. The initiative, including subsidiary fund raising ventures, from food sales to a loud shirt day, raised over £12,500 for our previous Firm Charity Royal Brompton & Harefields Hospitals Charity.
Over the last 12 months, the firm has undertaken or supported a raft of other charitable and initiatives, including:
- clothes collections for the charities: Dress for Success; Suited and Booted; and British Heart Foundation
- 'Jeans for Genes' day
- 10k London Legal Walk in aid of the London Legal Support Trust
- Oxfam 'Lawyers Against Poverty' cake sale
In addition, the firm participated in the Oxford Legal Walk in aid of Access to Justice Foundation, as well as "Wear it Pink" day in aid of breast cancer awareness.
We take our responsibilities for our people and the communities in which we live and work seriously. We support a number of initiatives that positively impact the local community in our offices in London, Oxford and Cardiff.
We are proud to confirm we are in our third year of accreditation as a Living Wage Employer. As a living wage employer, Lewis Silkin ensure that all employees, aged 18 and over, and including certain classes of contracted staff, are paid at least the living wage.
Oasis Academy South Bank lunches
We visit the Oasis Academy South Bank and have lunch with the children and help them to develop their communication and networking skills as well as their knowledge of the world of employment.
Reading Schemes London and Cardiff
Volunteers from the Cardiff and London offices visit a local school to support children in their reading. The sessions support and nurture the children to be the best they can be. Raising their confidence and self-esteem through fun, literacy-based activities, raising both reading attainment and future aspirations.
Oxford Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) employment law clinic
Volunteers from the Oxford office regularly take part in employment advice sessions at the CAB clinic in Oxford. These are 30 minute long sessions where the client is looking for some general guidance regarding their legal rights, any merits that a potential claim may have and the next steps that they should take.
Cardiff Employment Advice Centre
A number of people from the team in Cardiff attend the Employment Law Clinic as advisors or administrators, where we support clients with legal advice on employment matters, such as dismissals, long term sickness absence, disciplinary, or any other issues they may have with their employer.
Gardening Challenge Day with SHP (Single Homeless Project)
Volunteers landscaped a garden for a supported housing project in Islington to transform it into a space to grow fruit and vegetables. The garden is being developed as part of SHP’s garden cooperative to encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors and grow their own food.
