Brexit Flowchart

19 January 2017

In a major speech on 17 January 2017, the Prime Minister Theresa May set out the Government's key negotiating objectives for exiting the European Union. But what Brexit might look like (and how we actually get there) remains far from clear, with considerable uncertainty about what the UK's relationship with the EU will be like afterwards.

How might the on-going legal challenge to the PM’s power to enact article 50 affect the path to Brexit? What if a trade deal with the EU cannot be negotiated? What if Parliament votes against a trade deal? There are big questions yet to be answered, but until then, we are faced with uncertainty.

This flowchart by Lewis Silkin’s Head of Employment James Davies helps provide answers to these questions (and more). It shows how the road to Brexit, and the UK’s on-going place in Europe, might be influenced by events.

We have recently updated the flowchart to show what has happened so far.
