Michael Burd
I advise on all employment issues - from joining to leaving and everything in between. I'm mainly involved in the resolution of employment disputes and helping to manage all aspects of change affecting clients’ workforces – both domestically and internationally.

Areas of Expertise

Some specifics

A typical day sees me:
    • - Advising businesses on difficult employment situations
    • - Helping to manage cross-border HR issues for multinational businesses
    • - Acting as an adviser and arbiter on disputes and commercial matters
    • - Running a busy and growing team of employment and incentives lawyers

Media relations and public speaking

I have been noted as a leading employment practitioner in both Chambers and The Legal 500. Also in the Guide to the World's Leading Labour and Employment Lawyers, The International Who's Who of Management Labour and Employment Lawyers and Who's Who in American Law.

I regularly speak at client and industry conferences and seminars.

I regularly contribute articles to various publications, including Management Today and People Management.

Recent examples of work

  • - I assisted a listed-company to agree satisfactory terms in an acrimonious dispute with their departing CEO.
  • - I represented a major professional services firm in the (successful) defence of a high-profile discrimination claim.
  • - I advised a large communications company on the poaching of a team from a major competitor, avoiding injunctive action through careful planning and preparation.
  • - I acted for a major US media corporation coordinating a restructuring exercise across 18 countries.

Qualifications and other experience

- BA Columbia University (History) (including one year at the London School of Economics)
- MPhil Cambridge University (International Relations)
- College of Law (CPE and Finals)
- (Plus more recently, a one-day course at Rick Stein's Seafood Cookery School).

I'm human too...

I think it's fair to say I'm a bit of a 'foodie' who:

  • - likes to wash down a meal with fine wines
  • - preferably while travelling
  • - or else after the cinema or theatre
  • - with friends and loved ones
  • - sometimes bemoaning the fact that I don't get to exercise as much as I'd like.
