Areas of Expertise

Some specifics

Typically, I might: - advise on the employment implications on transferring IT services from a number of European locations to a shared service centre in Slovakia. - draft a privacy and data protection policy - negotiate the TUPE provisions on a social landlord taking over the running of care homes from a local authority - respond to an Employment Tribunal application claiming equal pay and alleging sexual harassment by a manager - advise on corporate restructuring and works councils; - advise on a Home Office investigation into illegal working

Media relations and public speaking

I have contributed to Butterworth's Encyclopedia of Forms and Precedents on employment issues. I regularly speak at conferences and seminars on matters such as the transfer of undertakings (TUPE), data protection and public procurement. I write regularly in the employment and housing press.

Recent examples of work

- Discrimination and equal pay claim by a main board director; - Advising on moving a company’s IT functions based in the UK to Spain and Sweden and co-ordinating similar transfers in four other EU countries. This involved both advising on documentation and risk and on practical aspects of staff transfer, consultation with a works council and redundancies. - Advice on a major regeneration scheme in south London both on EU procurement aspects and on reorganisation of affected employees

Clients

- global computer company - large manufacturing company - logistics group - major social landlord

Qualifications and other experience

I qualified as a solicitor in 1978 and worked at a law centre for 10 years specialising in employment, housing, immigration and public law.

What the commentators say

"He [Steve] is highly regarded for both contentious and non contentious work." (Chambers 2011)

I'm human too...

I live in Islington and cycle to work. I enjoy walking through peat bogs, skiing, cooking, travelling in the outback and learning the piano. Amongst others, I love Thierry Henry (still).
