Furlough has been a lifeline for many business but it has drawbacks and complications.

As restrictions lift and the economy recovers, employers should expect 2021 to bring increased scrutiny over furlough decisions and calculations and the likely tapering down or ending of government support.

Furlough scheme extended until end of March

The government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (aka the furlough scheme) has been extended until the end of March 2021. Although this is welcome and will allow for more effective business planning, the new five-month extension may mean some employees will spend an entire year on furlough.
