2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, which made it possible for women to qualify as barristers or solicitors for the first time.
To mark this step towards gender equality, we have partnered with The First 100 Years, an initiative which seeks to ensure a strong and equal future for all women in the legal profession by raising awareness about their history and inspiring future generations. Our event aims to mark this historic occasion as well as sparking discussion and shedding light on the topic of gender diversity in the legal industry and beyond.
The First 100 Years initiative has commissioned 100 films featuring inspiring women in the legal profession. Lewis Silkin is delighted to be participating in this fantastic celebration by sponsoring a film about Rachel Spearing, a barrister at Serjeants’ Inn Chambers (see profile here). We will be screening the premiere of this film, after which Rachel will be sharing her experiences and there will be a discussion with our panellists, Sufia Parkar, Regional Director at McCann-Erickson; Kate Varah, Executive Director at The Old Vic; Laura Farnsworth, Partner and Head of rockhopper; and Sophie Jamieson, Lewis Silkin Trainee. We are delighted to be able to hold this event at Sainsbury’s HQ auditorium with Lewis Silkin colleagues and clients from across our sectors.
We hope you will be able to join us to celebrate this important milestone.
