Technology continues rapidly to change where and how we work. It poses challenges for both employers and unions, and increasingly calls into question the effectiveness of our employment laws.

This event will consider the following key developments:

  1. The limits of the definition of a 'worker' as explored in the Uber, Deliveroo, and Pimlico Plumbers cases, and what next for the Taylor Review proposals?
  2. Tips from the frontline for responding to union recognition requests and defending hostile derecognition requests in the Central Arbitration Committee.
  3. Will electronic balloting for industrial action be given the green light?
  4. What might be the implications of ever-improving remote conferencing facilities for how information and consultation takes place?
  5. A round-up of the last year’s key cases including:
  • the Employment Appeal Tribunal’s decision on unlawful offers outside of collective bargaining arrangements in Kostal;
  • the High Court’s first decisions on the Trade Union Act 2016 in Argos and Thomas Cook; and
  • the Central Arbitration Committee’s decision on “joint employers” in IWGB v University of London
