This report by Brookings finds that automation and AI will affect tasks in virtually all occupational groups in the future but the effects will be of varied intensity - and drastic only for some. It highlights that technology's impacts will vary especially across occupations, places and demographic groups, with men, young workers and underrepresented communities being particularly affected.
The research reveals that to manage and make the most of these changes, five major agendas require attention on the part of federal, state, local, business, and civic leaders. These require key stakeholders to: (1) embrace growth and technology; (2) promote a constant learning mindset by investing in reskilling incumbent workers, expanding accelerated learning and certifications, making skill development more financially accessible, and fostering uniquely human qualities; (3) facilitate smoother adjustment by creating a Universal Adjustment Benefit to support all displaced workers and maximising hiring through a subsidised employment programme; (4) reduce hardships for workers who are struggling by reforming and expanding income supports for workers in low-paying jobs and reducing financial volatility for workers in low-wage jobs; and (5) mitigate harsh local impacts by future-proofing vulnerable regional economies and expanding support for community adjustment.
