12 November 2012

City law firm Lewis Silkin LLP today announced that it is expanding its footprint within the UK, and will shortly be opening an office in Cardiff to join its London and Oxford locations.

New Cardiff location to initially focus on employment law

City law firm Lewis Silkin LLP today announced that it is expanding its footprint within the UK, and will shortly be opening an office in Cardiff to join its London and Oxford locations.

The new Cardiff office, which will be located at Southgate House, Wood Street, Cardiff, is scheduled to open on Monday 19th November. The office will initially focus on supporting clients on issues related to employment law and will be managed by a partner from the London employment team who will transfer to Cardiff on its opening. It is hoped that the office will grow to around 10 staff by the end of 2013.

Ian Jeffery, Managing Partner of Lewis Silkin LLP, commented:

“We are delighted to announce this expansion of our business. The opening of our third office in Cardiff will ensure the continued delivery of exceptional service and hands-on support in response to ever-changing client needs. After careful consideration, Cardiff was chosen due to the excellent legal talent available within the local market and a strong cultural fit with our firm.

We are confident that our Cardiff office will be a seamless extension of our existing footprint within the UK, and greatly look forward to its progressive growth over the next few years.”

Business Minister, Edwina Hart, has welcomed Lewis Silkin’s expansion and investment in Wales which is supported by a £160,000 business finance grant from the Welsh Government.

Lewis Silkin attended the ‘Legal Wales’ launch hosted by the Minister earlier this year at The Law Society’s Chancery Lane offices. The event promoted the Welsh Government’s growth strategy for the financial and professional services sector to a select audience of representatives from major City law firms.

The Minister said:

“I am delighted to welcome Lewis Silkin to Wales to join what is a rapidly growing sector of the Welsh economy. At the ‘Legal Wales’ launch in London I encouraged firms working in the legal profession to seriously consider Wales as the business location of choice for future expansion and investment.

It is therefore excellent news that Lewis Silkin has done just that and chosen Cardiff for its expansion. They will, I am sure, benefit from the range of opportunities that Wales can offer law firms, including the fact that Cardiff has the UK’s only Enterprise Zone dedicated to financial and professional services.”

Councillor Russell Goodway, Cabinet Member for Finance, Business and the Local Economy at Cardiff Council said:

“The decision by Lewis Silkin to set up a new office in Cardiff is warmly welcomed by the City Council. Their decision is not only an endorsement of Cardiff as a growing location for legal and professional services but highlights the influence of the City’s new Enterprise Zone in focusing on the opportunities in this growing sector of the economy.”

Mike Fenwick, Director of Grants at Broomfield & Alexander, the largest independent accounting firm in Wales, said:

“We were delighted to assist Lewis Silkin in securing grant funding from the Welsh Government to support the establishment of their new office in Cardiff. Attracting a top 100 UK law firm to the capital is excellent news for Cardiff and for Wales, and we wish Lewis Silkin every success with the new venture.”
