Senior LOCOG lawyer joins Lewis Silkin

12 February 2013

Alex Kelham brings Olympic and Paralympic experience to enhance the firm’s sports and brand management expertise.

City law firm Lewis Silkin LLP today announces the appointment of Alex Kelham as senior associate in its Sport Group.

Alex joins Lewis Silkin after seven years at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) where she served as Senior Lawyer on brand protection matters. She will work closely with Lewis Silkin’s renowned Media, Brands and Technology team.

At LOCOG, Alex focused on commercial rights management and ensured maximum protection for the London 2012 brands, working with sponsors, sports bodies, government and industry stakeholders to achieve this. She regularly served as a spokesperson on London 2012 brand protection matters and led LOCOG’s brand protection operations during the Games, helping to manage a team of over 100 venue-based lawyers and volunteers. Through her time at LOCOG Alex oversaw the development and implementation of special statutory rights and controls, addressed infringements of LOCOG’s legal rights, and initiated licensing schemes enabling unprecedented non-commercial access to the London 2012 brand.

Before training as a lawyer, Alex was a world-class swimmer, winning relay medals at the 1994 Commonwealth Games (one gold, two silver), and the 1995 European Championships (two bronze).

Commenting on the appointment, Owen Eastwood, Head of the Sports Group at Lewis Silkin LLP, said:

"Alex is a tremendous addition to our Sports Group. The extent of her responsibility during the world’s largest sporting event illustrates her intellectual capacity, management ability, and superlative expertise in sports commercial rights management. Alex will be a fantastic asset to our team and to our clients."

Alex added:

"After my time at LOCOG I wanted to join a practice which is renowned for its expertise in both sports and brand management. It is therefore a perfect fit for me to join the team at Lewis Silkin, and I look forward to working with its clients and contributing to the firm’s continued excellence in these areas."
