The Centre for Ageing Better’s 2025 State of Ageing report reveals millions more people are living well into their seventies, eighties, nineties and beyond, in good health and working for longer. However, it also draws attention to disparities in resources, opportunities and outcomes that exist between different geographic areas, showing enormous variation in how people across England experience later life. The research reveals that poor health and caring responsibilities – both of which have the greatest impact on people from more deprived areas – make it harder to work a full and uninterrupted career. Health problems were found to be the main reason people leave the workforce, despite nearly half a million people aged 50 to 65 who have left work due to health reasons would return if the right support were in place. The report calls on the government and others to address the lack of political focus that has resulted in a chronic underinvestment in helping people age well in order to properly value and benefit from the contributions of older people in society.
