Technology is rapidly changing the way we work. Businesses can operate app-based recruitment and task allocation methods, and exclusively use remote workers. Individuals in the “gig economy” can work for several organisations at the same time using their smartphones.

The shift is a challenge for employers and unions and calls into question the effectiveness of our employment laws. Cases grappling with the question of whether gig economy workers are self-employed, workers or employees are a high profile example of this. Relationships between unions and employers are also changing, as unions come to terms with the problem of organising remote and itinerant workforces while taking advantage of new technologies.

Our discussion forum will explore the following:

  1. The latest on worker status, including the decisions in Uber, Citysprint and Pimlico Plumbers and the Taylor Review.
  2. How are trade unions adapting to the gig economy? What new organising techniques are being deployed? What challenges are unions posing to businesses? How much do employers in more “traditional” industries need to be concerned about this?
  3. Tips from the frontline of resisting statutory recognition applications.

The event, on Tuesday 9th May, will begin at 5.00pm (registration from 4.30pm) and run until 6.15pm, and will be followed with networking, drinks and canapés.
